Freddie had had a bad start to the season but was on the line for the fourth round and ready to do battle on the factory-backed V4 liquid cooled two stroke NSR500. The early form of 1984 champion Eddie Lawson on the Marlboro Yamaha had been electrifying and Yamaha Lucky Strike teamster Randy Mamola was equally impressive.
