Wayne Rainey (Yamaha) was starting to feel the pressure of leading the series only 8.5 points ahead of Eddie Lawson (Honda). Sito Pons had to finish ahead of Jacques Cornu to retain his 250 crown in his 100th GP and he meant to celebrate in style by winning.
