Kevin Schwantz on his Suzuki RGV500 was clearly determined to maintain pressure on points leader Wayne Rainey (Yamaha) and Eddie Lawson had no intention of being an also-ran. Others put in daunting performances - particularly Wayne Gardner, Niall Mackenzie (Suzuki), Juan Garriga (Yamaha), Jean-Phillipe Ruggia and Carl Fogarty.
