Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, Husqvarna, Cagiva and KTM were all represented at the Rothenthurm track which fully tested their capabilities. Championship leader Jacky Vimond of France considered he would have a tough task to hold his keen rival Michel Rinaldi from Italy. And so it was to prove. The pair fought it out accompanied from time to time by Michele Fanton (Yamaha).
